　　普桑﹙1594-1665﹚是法國畫家。生於諾曼第，經過短期訓練之後，約 1612 年赴巴黎。他的風格可能以第二楓丹白露派﹙School of Fontainebleau﹚為基礎，再加入法國皇家收藏的古代及義大利文藝復興作品的影響。1624 年赴羅馬，在這段早期奮勵努力期，他曾在多明尼基諾﹙Domenichino﹚的工作室作畫，而深受其明快構圖與冷靜色調的影響。

　　1629-30 年左右得了一場重病，成為其風格的轉振點，他不再追求逐漸流行華麗的巴洛克風格，而轉向較小的作品，並為中上階層的贊助者作畫。在這段初期羅馬時期，他嘗試了很多實驗，其中之一即為對威尼斯美術的短暫興趣，並因而融合了古典形式與絕美的威尼斯色彩，例如那件在羅浮宮的「詩人的靈感」﹙lnspiration of the Poet﹚即是。同時主題亦由宗教轉向古典的、神話的或詩人塔索﹙Tasso﹚的作品。但是這個輓歌調的階段為期甚短。到 1633 年，他進行繪製具有戲劇性姿勢的群像作品，形成敘事性作風。威尼斯派色彩的影響也變為固有色的使用，而拉斐爾﹙Raphael﹚與古代的風格也成為最主要的影響。他設計出一種小型舞臺，配上著衣的小蠟像，實驗其動作、組合，以及照明的效果。

　　晚期的作品，像是研究立體幾何形的論文，有著面無表情、僵立的人物，與早期作品相較，顯得呆板而多慮，但是它們卻是他的理論的合理呈現，他認為一幅畫必須包含最高的道德內涵，並表現在一個能傳達其知性內涵的結構中；圖式本身必須是令人愉快的，而且不得與繪畫的二度空間性質相抵觸；色彩是指點視覺上的統一，而非提供感覺上的魅力。他這種嚴格態度的最終表現，是他的風景畫，在此可看出他與克勞德﹙Claude﹚完全相異之處。這種輕視色彩的理論，引起了普桑派與魯本斯派﹙Rubenist﹚之間的爭論。
